Free advice at Twyford Orchid Weekend

Visitors to Wyevale Garden Centre – Hare Hatch, Twyford in Berkshire this month (March 14 and 15, 2009) will be able to get some free advice from an in-store orchid adviser.

Linda Norris will be helping host an Orchid Weekend at the garden centre on Floral Mile, Twyford on Saturday, March 14 and Sunday, March 15 and will be available to give customers advice on the care of orchids.

Linda explained: “I am delighted to be able to help with this event and I am looking forward to meeting people who are interested in growing orchids.”

During the weekend there will be displays of orchids and free advice on caring for the plants.

Twyford Garden centre Manager, Errol Austin said: “This event is designed to give people interested in orchids an introduction to the plant. Everyone is welcome whether you are a complete novice or an enthusiast. We will have a range of 12 stunning varieties on display during the weekend.

“As well as all the free advice provided during the Orchid Weekend, we will also have displays of orchids on show running up to and including Mothering Sunday on March 22. These exotic and beautiful plants make lovely gifts for mums.

“There will be some special offers during the weekend only. We are offering a free orchid pot, selected pots only, with every single-stem Phalaenopsis orchid worth £2.99 and two twin-stem Phalaenopsis orchids can be purchased for £20. They are normally £14.99 each. There will also be an orchid drip feeder buy one get one free offer from March 12 until 26. The drip feeders are normally priced at 99p each. All offers are available while stocks last.”

The weekend is part of a series of free events being organised throughout the year at the garden centre on a number of different gardening topics.

Chance for Twyford schools to win use of veg planting beds

Twyford Schools keen for their pupils to find out how to grow their own vegetables this year are invited to enter a competition at a garden centre in Berkshire this and next month (February & March).

Staff at Wyevale Hare Hatch Garden Centre on Floral Mile near Twyford will be hosting a Vegetable Growing Weekend on Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 8 for anyone interested in growing their own vegetables.

The free event will include a competition for Twyford schools to win the chance to use the garden centre’s in-store planting beds for vegetable growing projects.

Garden centre Manager, Errol Austin said: “We would like to offer schools in the area the opportunity to win the use of our new vegetable planting beds to grow their own vegetables at the garden centre.

“The winning school will receive a complete grow your own kit to plant up their vegetable beds, free advice and the garden centre team will help care for the growing vegetable plants. They will also win two ‘Starting Gardening’ books from the Yeominis range of children’s gardening products. Our experts will also be available for school visits to help children learn more about gardening.”

To enter, pupils, teachers, parents, grandparents and guardians can pick up an entry form at the Twyford garden centre. No purchase is necessary.

Errol explained: “The nominator will be asked to tell us in no more than 200 words, why their school deserves to win the chance to use our beds. The closing date for entries is 4pm on Sunday, March 15.”

The competition is designed to tie in with the Vegetable Growing Weekend at the garden centre.

Errol added: “We hope as many people as possible come along and join us for this informative weekend, which will be dedicated to learning how to successfully grow your own vegetables.

“We can help people with choosing seeds, plants and equipment, and we can also offer ideas on how to get the very best from your vegetable patch. For people with smaller gardens we’ll be able to give advice on growing vegetables in growbags, tubs and containers too.

“Also during the weekend, there will be free demonstrations and advice on how to grow your own vegetables.”

Armed robbery in Hurst

Police are appealing for witnesses after three men attempted to steal money from the Post Office, The Street, Hurst, on 17/02.

Three men wearing balaclavas, dark clothing and armed with ice picks and a hammer entered the Post Office at around 2.30pm.

One of the men ran towards the counter and started smashing the glass screen with an ice pick.

The other two men, one armed with an ice pick and the other with a hammer, approached the counter of the main shop, threatened the member of staff and demanded money.

The victim confronted the offenders and they made off out the main door of the shop.in the direction of Wokingham.

Det Con Phil Mullins from Loddon Valley CID said: ““I would like to speak to anyone who saw three men in the area wearing dark clothing.

“This type of offence is rare in this area, and I would like to reassure the public a full investigation is underway.

“I urge anyone with information to contact me or Crimestoppers.”

Free Twyford Grow Your Own Vegetables Weekend...

People from Berkshire who want to grow their own vegetables this year are invited to a free event at a Twyford garden centre in the county next month (March).

Staff at Hare Hatch Garden Centre on Floral Mile near Twyford, which is part of the Wyevale family, will be hosting the Vegetable Growing Weekend on Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 8 for anyone interested in finding out how to sow vegetable seeds and grow their own food.

Hare Hatch, Twyford Garden Centre predicts grow your own is going to be very popular this year.

Errol added: “From what our customers are telling us they are looking to produce their own vegetables from their allotments, gardens and patios to help with the costs of their food bills during the current economic climate.

“They are also saying to us that they think home-grown produce tastes better and that it is better for the environment, as it’s picked and then eaten at home, so no wasteful packaging or added food miles.”

Wyrd Sisters come to Twyford

The stage adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s Wyrd Sisters is coming to Twyford in October 2009.

Inspired by (but not based upon) Shakespeare’s Scottish play, Wyrd Sisters is a magical brew of witches, treachery, demons and love. The kingdom is revolting!! It feels unloved by the very man who should be treating it to cosy nights in front of the fire… that man being the King. So with the help of three witches the search is on for the true King of Lancre.
