Tree-mendous Wargrave efforts by the Piggott School

It isn’t the most usual type of gift traditionally given in December but pupils at The Wargrave Piggott School have been busy organising five special tree presents for future generations of the school this month.

As part of National Tree Planting Week the Wargrave school’s ecology group planted five trees to replace similar trees destroyed in the summer 2007 storms.

The group was helped by Wokingham Borough Council’s tree and landscape team to apply for funding to replace the trees earlier this year. The National Tree Council agreed to pay for the Wargrave project under its Trees for Schools fund – which allowed the pupils to select five semi-mature specimens ready for planting on the school site.

The Wargrave pupils chose a mixture of native trees, including an oak and silver birch for the back of the school, and two non-native sweet gum trees to provide a splash of colour to a built up area of the school. They also selected an oriental plane tree – which was chosen to commemorate and celebrate the ecology group’s hard work.

The group wanted to carry out the planting work as a gift to future generations of the school, so they have an attractive and green surrounding in which to learn and socialise. They completed the planting with help from their teacher Jean Wilson, and Sarah Duckworth and Lee Garner from the council’s tree team.

Cllr Simon Weeks, executive member for environment, said: “It’s great to see that the young people want to enhance their local environment, not only for themselves but for other children to enjoy in years to come. The successful grant application is testimony to the hard work of the ecology group and their teachers and the new trees will be a long–term legacy for all future pupils of The Piggott School.”

Dinton Pastures, Hurst has Brilliant birds, miniacture lumberjacks and mulled wine this yuletide!

A host of Hurst adventure, wildlife and winter fun is on the cards at Wokingham Borough Council’s biggest country park this festive season as bonfires, junior lumberjacks and brilliant birds descend on Dinton Pastures over the next few weeks.

A range of activities for the young, old and young at heart are on offer at the country park in Hurst in December starting off with the Aren’t Birds Brilliant Walk on Saturday December 6, and repeated again on Saturday January 3, 2009.

The Hurst walk is led by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and focuses on finding out more about local feathered friends who live and visit the country park. It is open to everyone, although under-18s must be accompanied by an adult. It starts at 9am from the main car park at Dinton Pastures and runs until 2pm. It costs £1 for adults, with proceeds going to the RSPB.

The junior rangers will also be busy on Saturday December 6 when they become mini-lumberjacks for the morning, taking part in some conservation work also at Dinton Pastures Country Park.

The youngsters will spend the morning helping the countryside rangers clear scrub and debris in the park before having a bonfire lunch of baked potato and beans. Parents and guardians will need to help children cook the food - and the whole family is welcome to join in for the outdoor feast!

The event starts at 10am and runs until 12.30pm and costs just £2 per child. Places must be booked in advance by calling the countryside service on (0118) 934 2016 or by emailing countryside@wokingham.gov.uk

And if the turkey, tinsel and trimmings gets too much over the festive season then why not walk it off during a ranger-led stroll around Hurst Dinton Pastures on Boxing Day!

The annual event, which usually attracts hundreds of people, is free and is a great way to grab some fresh air after all the festivities. Mince pies and mulled wine will be available after the walk for £3. There’s no need to book in advance, just meet at 2pm on Friday December 26 at the sailing club car park, Sandford Lane, Hurst.

Cllr Simon Weeks, executive member for environment, said: “There are several activities on offer at Dinton Pastures over the next month or so, which are not only great fun but are also educational and a good way of exercising.

“The Boxing Day walk is always a firm favourite with residents and visitors so if you haven’t come along before it is worth popping along and walking off some of the festive over-indulgence this year and seeing some of the borough’s prettiest scenery at the same time.”
