Check Hurst golf club's opening times in extreme weather

Golf enthusiasts and residents who use Hurst Golf Club are being urged to check its opening times during extreme bouts of harsh winter weather over the coming months.

Wokingham Borough Council’s countryside service will continue to run golf sessions at the club in Hurst this winter but extreme rain or snow may force services, including the clubhouse, to be temporarily suspended until the bad weather passes.

The services will only be suspended if rain and snow is constant and heavy or the harsh winter weather has caused the course to become boggy, overly muddy or is frozen by snow or ice. Services will continue if the weather is fine and rain or snow is moderate.

In previous years, the Hurst golf course has been forced to limit some of its services owing to bad weather for a short period of time and this year it will be taking the same approach to ensure that the green remains viable for golfing after the bad weather has passed. Services will resume immediately once the extreme rain or snow has cleared.

When services on the golfing green are suspended the clubhouse will also suspend its services including its food and bar facilities.

Therefore if golfers wish to use Hurst Golf Course or the clubhouse this winter and there has been extreme or heavy rainfall or snow in the past 24 hours they are urged to call the golf club to check if services will be running that day.

Chris Buggy, Hurst countryside service manager, said: “We don’t want people to make the journey to the golf club and find that they can’t play or use the clubhouse, especially in really bad weather conditions, which is why if it has been raining or snowing really hard they should call to check services are still running.
“When the weather is so bad in the winter it can cause real problems for the course and if play goes ahead it can causing lasting damage that could threaten the future enjoyment of it – which is why it is imperative to stop play in extremely boggy, muddy or snowy conditions.

“If anyone is unsure about what time they can play or visit the clubhouse they should call the clubhouse on (0118) 934 4355 where staff will only be too happy to advise them.”
