Twyford Bowling Club

Twyford Bowling Club are holding an Open Day on Saturday 6th May commencing at 2pm.

Anyone who would like to take up bowls or would simply like to try it to see whether they would like it is welcome to come along.

Refreshments will be served during the afternoon and coaches and members will be available to introduce visitors to the game.

Twyford are looking to increase their membership and whether you wish to play socially or in friendly matches or to try your luck in the league and competitions you will be very welcome.

When on the green flat shoes are required to avoid damaging the green. If you do not have such shoes we can loan you a pair for the afternoon.

Bowls is a great game, good excercise and played by young or old.

The club has members from Reading, Woodley, Wokingham, Hurst, Maidenhead Wargrave, Ruscombe and Twyford and has a reputation for being a good social club with a friendly atmosphere.

Easy to find, we are in the Wargrave Road, close to the cross roads in the centre of the village and plenty of parking space is available close by.

Hopes For New Twyford Library Still High

Dee Tomlin and Stephen Conway, Twyford’s Lib Dem District Councillors, recently submitted a petition bearing more than 600 signatures in support of a new library for Twyford.

They should like to thank everyone who signed the petition, and the Twyford Advertiser for supporting the campaign for a new library.

Talks are continuing to secure the old J. W. Greens site, and Dee and Stephen remain optimistic about the outcome.

Twyford & Wargrave Lib Dems candidate

Martin Alder, an airline pilot whose children attended Wargrave Piggott school, is the Lib Dem candidate in the District Council elections in Ruscombe, Wargrave and Remenham on 4 May.

Martin has stood in the ward before, and is strongly supported by the Lib Dems in Twyford, where there are no local elections this year.

‘Martin is an excellent candidate, who would make a good councillor for the local community’, Dee Tomlin told Focus.

CCTV at Twyford Station

Stephen Conway local Lib Dem councillor recently submitted a petition from local residents calling for a CCTV camera to cover Twyford station forecourt, where there have been several episodes of vandalism and anti-social behaviour. The petition follows on from Stephen asking repeated questions at the council about the need for CCTV coverage. He is meeting council officers in an attempt to progress matters. Arson - Twyford

Police are appealing for witnesses following an arson in Twyford yesterday (3/4).

At around 1.30am a silver Peugeot 106 was set alight in Hurst Road, Twyford.

PC Maggie Bruce, of Loddon Valley CID, said: “I am very keen to speak to two white men, aged between 18 and 19 years old who were seen in the area around the time of incident as they may have witnessed the fire and seen a white car driving away from the scene.

“I am also looking for any information in relation to suspicious purchases of petrol in Reading, Woodley or Twyford earlier in the evening.”

Anyone with information about that could assist police inquiries is urged to contact PC Bruce at Loddon Valley police station via the police enquiry centre on 0845 8 505 505. If you don’t want to speak to police and don’t want to leave your name contact the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.

FGW Trains Twyford Update

Following our vigorous campaign against the Twyford cuts proposed in the draft December Timetable I was pleased to see that this week First Great Western have announced a number of proposed improvements. In particular they now plan to add an additional fast train, calling at Twyford shortly after 07:00 and then stopping only at Maidenhead before arriving into London at around 07:30. This change has yet to be confirmed by Network Rail.

In addition to this there is good news for residents in Wargrave and Shiplake who had faced a drastic cut in service; following the strong representations from local people FGW have relented and agreed that all trains will stop at both these stations.

Both of these changes are extremely welcome and go to show that our campaign has been effective.

However, even with these changes the December 2006 timetable provides a demonstrably inferior Twyford service to that provided at the moment. The current service is significantly worse than that we received just two years ago and I therefore am determined to ensure that we receive improvements over and above the current service!

I am pleased that FGW do appear to be listening hard to local feedback and seem willing to amend their timetable where possible. Alison Forster has said that further announcements will be made over the coming couple of weeks and I intend to step up our campaign for better rail services.

If you have not already signed the on-line petition at www.saveourtrains.com please do consider doing so and encourage anyone you know who hasn't yet signed to do so. Next week I shall be presenting the final signatures to the Department of Transport, so if you could sign it before then that would be ideal.

Thanks once again for your support for this campaign. It is refreshing to receive good Twyford news on this issue; but I am determined that they don't think this is enough and will continue to try to ensure that further improvements are forthcoming!
