Performance of Stainer's Crucifixion by the Twyford Singers

7 pm on Palm Sunday, 9th April 2006,
St Mary’s Parish Church,
Twyford,
Berkshire

As always at this time of year, the Twyford Singers will present a performance that depicts the Easter story, at St Mary’s Church, Twyford. On Palm Sunday evening they will sing the Crucifixion, composed by John Stainer, which is a dramatic portrayal of some of the incidents in the last days of Jesus’ life on earth. The music was written in 1887 and has been performed widely since then.

Chairman Judy Hallinan, said: “Many people in the audience will be familiar with the melodious notes of bass soloist Alan Bullimore who has been associated with the choir for several years and who always brings dignity to the roles he sings. This year we have a new soloist for the tenor part, which will be taken by Chris Jones, who comes highly recommended and is an undergraduate at the London College of Music in Ealing. We are very much looking forward to working with them both.”

Musical Director, Simon Rigby said: “The choir is always pleased to be invited to start Easter week in the parish with this piece, which they really enjoy singing. There are also opportunities for the congregation to take part in the hymns.”

A donation from the proceeds will be made to St Mary’s Church and Christian Aid.

The Crucifixion, St Mary’s Church, Church Road, Twyford at 7pm on Sunday 9th April 2006.
Tickets at £4 including refreshment can be obtained from 0118 934 2406, 0118 934 5985 or at the door on the night.

Attempted armed robbery – Ruscombe

Police are appealing for witnesses to an attempted armed robbery at a shop in Ruscombe on Monday (20/3).

Two teenage white males entered BS Stores, in Ruscombe Road, at 7.40pm and threatened the owner with a hand-gun.

But the shop-keeper held his ground and chased the offenders out of his shop. They left the scene empty handed in a dark coloured car with no lights on.

DI Ian Winson, from Loddon Valley CID, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are linking this attempted robbery to similar incidents in Charvil and Meadow Road, Wokingham, last week, and we are treating all three cases very seriously.

“Our investigations are ongoing at this stage and we will take every action necessary to detain the offenders.”

The offender who held the hand-gun is white, 5ft 10ins – 6ft, and between 18 and 20 years old. He wore a black hooded top, black trousers and black footwear, and he covered his mouth with a scarf.

The second man is white, around 5ft 6ins and 16-17 years old. He wore a black puffer jacket and a balaclava or scarf over the lower part of his face. He also had dirty white trainers.

Anyone with any information about this incident should contact DI Winson at Loddon Valley police station via 0845 8 505 505.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to speak to police or give your name, please call the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.

No Trains for Twyford Customers

Customers were left fuming in the cold at Twyford Train Station today waiting for their First Great Western Link “transformed” trains “service”.

Following a ‘technical problem’ trains to Reading were ‘disrupted’. A passenger reported that they started waiting for a train to Reading at 1645 and finally got on the first train that stopped at Twyford at 1810. Disruption does happen and problems do occur with ‘signals’ but standing for nearly 1 ½ hours in sub zero temperatures while train after train passes on the other track going to Reading without stopping leaves this particular “valued customer” dismayed.

At Reading station they were told that:-

The trains don’t stop unless they are asked to. Apparently no one had thought to ask them to stop at Twyford.

Great western link are trying to reduce the number of their local services to improve the Intercity ones.

As always Norman the Twyford station member of staff did everything possible to help his passengers. Unfortunately he only runs the station not the trains.

The First Great Western website at 2102 on 1st March said:

“First Great Western services continue to experience severe disruption following major signalling problems in the Maidenhead/Twyford area.

The problem has now been rectified, however delays and cancellations can be expected.

First Great Western apologises for any inconvenience caused.”
