Email thephoenixfund@aol.com

The walk
There will be two walks - one of 10 kilometres (approximately 6 miles) and another for the more energetic of 14 kilometres (about 9 miles). The walk is for anyone who is reasonably fit though there will be stiles and muddy paths so it's not suitable for children in buggies. The walk will try to follow, as closely as is possible on public rights of way, the boundary of the parish of Twyford.

Who can go?
Although aimed at local charitable or youth groups, anyone can take part. It is not a competition but a fundraising opportunity. The idea is that everyone who is walking will be issued with a sponsorship form and can raise money for the charity of their choice. There will be a fee for each participant of £5 a head and this will go to the Twyford Scouts and Guides Project Phoenix to raise money for the new headquarters following the fire last November. If participants are also raising money through their sponsors for Project Phoenix then there is no fee.

Safety
You will be walking in groups of a maximum of 8 people which, in the case of those under 14, will need to include 2 adults. Starting times will be staggered to ensure that walkers do not bunch up into large groups. There will be a first aid post at the start and marshals at difficult or dangerous road crossings. At a half way point there will be an opportunity to replenish water bottles, buy emergency food supplies or even get a lift back to the start if it's all getting too much! However, in line with normal good walking practice, each party would be expected to ensure that they have good supplies of water, an emergency first aid kit and enough food for the day. All parties will be given a map as well as written directions.

Equipment
Each participant will be issued with a reminder of what to wear and take on the walk nearer the time. Most of it should be common sense. E.g. in April waterproofs and comfortable walking boots are likely to be needed. Despite the fact that we will never be very far from the village centre, walkers need to be prepared for muddy paths and dress accordingly.

Register now to receive your sponsorship form. You don't need to pay until the day. Start getting your sponsors now!! Pre-registration is needed to get a start time. We obviously cannot let everyone start at the same time, so start times will be staggered, commencing at 9am. If you do decide to turn up on the day you may have to wait for a start time.

ABOUT FEED THE CHILDREN

Feed The Children works internationally, specialising in providing emergency relief to communities in need. With offices in Twyford (near Reading) and Bristol, the charity collects and dispatches essential goods to countries such as Angola, Liberia, Uganda, and most recently, the Tsunami-hit area of south Asia.

Loaders

FEED THE CHILDREN

Occasionally – once a month or so - some extra help is needed for loading aid lorries, and we need a few of people we can call on. Loaders need to be physically fit, and capable of some heavy work.

Who might do this?

Big strong people who can spare an odd day occasionally. Lorries are packed at either Twyford, or Remenham (near Henley on Thames ).

Fund-raisers

FEED THE CHILDREN

Fund-raising isn't just holding a can outside a supermarket. Feed The Children volunteers run stalls at their local fair, sell raffle tickets, attend exhibitions, talk to school assemblies, give presentations to businesses, organise fun-runs, run charity concerts, sponsored swims… and sometimes hold cans outside supermarkets.

We have volunteer vacancies at our Twyford office.

Volunteers working with children will be required to complete a CRB check.

Who might do this?

People with time to spare, an outgoing personality and some organisational skills.

People with a day or half-day per week to spare, and have some office experience. We welcome people who are looking to update their computer skills, or wish to do voluntary work for a while before returning to paid employment.

Twyford Singers' Easter Performance

Twyford Singers’ Easter Performance
"Olivet to Calvary"
Palm Sunday 20th March 2005
7pm at Twyford Parish Church

"Olivet to Calvary"
J H Maunder
Maunder's "Olivet to Calvary" recalls simply and reverently the scenes which mark the last few days of the Saviour's life on earth, and some of the reflections suggested thereby. The rejoicing of the multitude with hosannas and palms, the view of Jerusalem from the steep of Olivet, the lament over the beautiful city, the scene m the Temple, and the lonely walk back over the Mount at night, form the chief features of the first part.

Part II. opens with the Supper of the Passover, at which Jesus washes His disciples' feet, and gives to His friends the new commandment of love for one another as the sign of true discipleship. From this the scene passes to the infinite pathos of the Garden of Gethsemane, the sudden appearance of the hostile crowd, Jesus forsaken by His disciples, His utter loneliness among ruthless foes, the tumult before Pilate in the Judgment Hall, the Passage of the Cross, the tragedy and triumph of Calvary.
